tomato sauce

Today I made lasagna. Sometimes I use a jar of sauce, but usually I make my own — the simple way. I’m sure it’s not very authentic (I don’t cook it slowly for hours or even for minutes), but it’s easy and it tastes good. And the lasagna turns out awesome, as lasagna should, and everyone is happy, or so they tell me!

*Note: This is the same sauce I use for homemade pizza.

*Edited to add another note: My daughter prefers a smoother sauce when making the pizza, so we often use a can of pureed tomatoes, rather than crushed tomatoes, when making this for pizza.


Tomato Sauce

1 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes

about 2 tablespoons olive oil



garlic powder

dried oregano

dried basil

about 1 teaspoon sugar

Stir all ingredients together.

*Note: I don’t have exact measurements because I don’t measure things like this … I don’t measure many things, actually. For this recipe I could guess, and for some of the items (such as sugar) I have, but I do it to taste, and sometimes I like more basil while other times more oregano. I will add that I am rather generous with the pepper, because I think tomatoes and pepper go well together.
